Rochdale social services removed about 20 children from six families in 1990 after a child's dream imagery was interpreted, by social workers primed by US cases, as evidence of a satanic sex-abuse ring; the children were released in 1991 after a court found the investigation flawed. A subsequent government-commissioned inquiry led by Professor Jean La Fontaine concluded organised satanic abuse was a myth, finding no evidence to substantiate any of 84 such allegations examined nationally.
