Archive classification

This is the archive's application of its published inclusion test. The cited record appears below.

The report concerns abuse committed through Catholic clerical ministry and diocesan decisions that protected or renewed access to children. It documents bishops and senior officials transferring accused priests, sending them to treatment, returning them to active ministry and withholding complaints from civil authorities. Clerical authority and the institution's control of ministry assignments were therefore material to access and recurrence.

  • Pastoral or clerical authority
  • Institutional obedience or isolation

Office of the Rhode Island Attorney General and Rhode Island State Police. After reviewing more than 250,000 pages of diocesan records dating to 1950 and contacting nearly 150 survivors, investigators identified 75 clergy credibly accused under a more-likely-than-not standard and over 300 reported victims. The report found that historical failures to report, remove and monitor accused clergy led to additional abuse.

  • transfer or return to ministry after credible reports
  • institutional concealment
