The 2018 Pennsylvania grand jury report found that '301 priests' were accused of 'sexually abusing more than 1,000 children' across six dioceses, with 'likely thousands more victims whose records were lost or who were too afraid to come forward.' It remains the largest single official documentation of clergy abuse in the United States.

Associated Press (2018) 'Prosecutor: Priests ‘weaponized’ the faith to abuse kids', AP via Yahoo News, 15 August. Available at: yahoo.com (Accessed: 14 July 2026).

'A landmark grand jury report on clergy abuse in six Roman Catholic dioceses in Pennsylvania detailed how priests often used religious rituals, symbols of the faith and the threat of eternity in hell to groom, molest and rape children.' One priest told a boy he was abusing that it was acceptable because the priest was 'an instrument of God'; children were told they would 'go to hell' if they disclosed, and that 'nobody would believe a lying child over a man of God's word.' A bishop acknowledged that one priest 'invoked the name of God to justify his actions against his victims while using their faith and the priesthood to manipulate them and secure their silence.' This is, precisely, the juju-oath mechanism — supernatural consequence deployed to guarantee a victim's silence — worked from a pulpit rather than a shrine.
