  1. 2026-05-14 · final appellate disposition

Tribunale di Enna (first instance); Corte d'Appello di Caltanissetta; Corte di Cassazione (final). Don Giuseppe Rugolo, priest of the Diocese of Piazza Armerina, had his sexual-violence-against-minors conviction made final by the Court of Cassation, which declared inadmissible both his defense's appeal and the prosecutor general's appeal against the reduced sentence. First-instance sentence of 4 years 6 months (Tribunale di Enna) was reduced on appeal at Caltanissetta applying a mitigating factor for two victims; that reduced sentence is now final. Laicized 14 July 2025. Investigation opened after victim Antonio Messina reported abuse spanning 2009-2013; multiple other victims identified.
