Fr Visarion Alexa was convicted of sexually assaulting a woman parishioner who had come to him for confession, the assault occurring on 23 April 2022 in the summer altar of his Bucharest church. He was sentenced to two and a half years' imprisonment, suspended, and ordered to pay damages. The Bucharest Court of Appeal rejected both his appeal and the victim's appeal (which sought a harsher sentence) on 18 September 2025, making the conviction final.
