Followers submitted to sexual 'anointing' rituals and paid extortionate sums because Ferreira had established himself as a prophet with supernatural knowledge of tragedies that would befall their families unless the ritual was performed — the coercive power was entirely a function of his claimed religious authority.

Proceedings

  1. 2025-03-19 · trial conviction

Brazil — 2ª Vara Criminal de Samambaia, Federal District. Sinval Ferreira, 41, was convicted of sexual coercion through fraud (posse sexual mediante fraude) and extortion of church followers, and sentenced to 11 years and 3 months' imprisonment. He had been arrested in 2024 by the Civil Police of the Federal District. A female accomplice, also a pastor at the church, was implicated in reinforcing the fraudulent prophecies and threats to followers.

Documented coercion mechanisms

  • false claims of prophetic foreknowledge of family deaths/tragedies used to induce fear
  • fraudulent 'unção' (anointing) rituals involving victims' intimate body parts framed as the only means to break the prophesied 'curse'
  • a second pastor (58, female) acting as accomplice, reinforcing the prophecies to followers and threatening them if sexual demands were not met
  • extortion of large sums from the same followers for the church
