High Court of Cassation and Justice, Romania. On 30 April 2025 Romania's High Court of Cassation and Justice upheld an 8-year sentence for former Bishop of Huși Corneliu Onilă and sentenced former Archimandrite Sebastian Jitaru to 14 years and 2 months for multiple counts of rape and sexual assault against students at the Ioan Gură de Aur Theological Seminary. Jitaru was found to have repeatedly raped three students, one assaulted at least nine times in a single year and another abused over two years, sometimes twice weekly. Onilă is the first senior Romanian Orthodox hierarch to be imprisoned.
