2025-02-05 · conviction, final (reversed trial-court acquittal)
Vâlcea Tribunal (first instance, acquittal); Court of Appeal, Pitești (reversal and final sentence). Monk Nicodim (civil name Nicolae Stancă), secretary of Frăsinei Monastery, and a lay caretaker, Marian Radu, were tried on charges of repeated rape, sexual assault and continued sexual corruption of two minor boys who had been drawn into helping sell church objects at the monastery between July 2021 and December 2022 and were lured with money and gifts. The Râmnicu Vâlcea trial court had acquitted Nicodim; the Pitești Court of Appeal reversed this on 5 February 2025, convicting him and sentencing him to 9 years' imprisonment (the lay co-defendant received 17 years 8 months). The decision is final. Victims were awarded EUR 15,000 in moral damages.
