The state's seven justices unanimously reversed a 2023 lower-court ruling and held that the Attorney General's office may convene a special grand jury to investigate decades of Catholic clergy sexual abuse statewide, a probe first announced in 2018 and blocked by a sealed Diocese of Camden motion arguing state grand-jury reports may not target private organizations. The new Camden bishop announced in May 2025 the diocese would no longer oppose the inquiry. Grand jury proceedings are secret; no findings had been published as of this record.
