Audiencia Provincial de Toledo; Tribunal Supremo (final). Priest José Luis Galán had his conviction for continuous sexual abuse of a student, committed 2010-2013 when she was 14-17 and he was her spiritual director at a Talavera de la Reina school, affirmed by the Tribunal Supremo: 8 years 6 months' imprisonment and 100,000 euros compensation confirmed. Court found the victim submitted to the acts because of the quasi-parental role, trust and respect she held for him as priest and spiritual director, and his manipulation invoking divine will.
Documented coercion mechanisms
- quasi-parental spiritual-direction relationship
- religious framing of the abuse as divinely willed

'[...] sometida a estos actos por el papel quasi-paternal que el sacerdote asumía, el respeto y la confianza que le profesaba como director espiritual y sacerdote, y su manipulación al sostener que sus actos eran lo que Dios quería.' (submitted to these acts because of the quasi-parental role the priest assumed, the respect and trust she held for him as spiritual director and priest, and his manipulation by claiming his acts were what God wanted.)
