2024-05-02 · parliamentary commission of inquiry, final report
Belgian Chamber of Representatives, federal parliamentary commission of inquiry. Following the September 2023 broadcast of the documentary series 'Godvergeten,' in which survivors and family members spoke, all Flemish political parties backed a call for a parliamentary inquiry; the Chamber of Representatives established the commission in October 2023 under chair Sophie De Wit. Its final report, presented 2 May 2024, made 137 recommendations, including appointment of a national commissioner for sexual boundary-crossing behaviour, improved police and judicial access to church files, mandatory file transfer when an accused cleric relocates, and a new arbitration/redress commission to replace the one set up after the 2010-2011 inquiry.
Documented coercion mechanisms
- priestly and religious pastoral authority
- institutional practices (transfer of accused clergy, confidentiality) that the commission found obstructed accountability
