The court itself named the mechanism: Rafiu was the victim's religious instructor within the mosque and a trusted family friend on that basis, and it was that standing — not mere physical proximity — that let him isolate a 14-year-old student inside the mosque on three separate occasions and then pay her to stay silent.

- national press sentencing report Punch, 'Cleric bags life jail for raping minor inside mosque' (4 November 2024).
Reports the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court sentenced Muslim cleric Alani Rafiu to life imprisonment for defiling a 14-year-old girl inside a mosque in Ikotun on 17 August 2021. States the judge held that the gravity of the offence could not be overstated as Rafiu 'betrayed the trust placed on him as a religious instructor and family friend', that he deliberately isolated the victim, exploited her vulnerability and paid her to buy silence; the victim's testimony described three separate incidents.
- national press sentencing report Daily Post Nigeria, 'Cleric bags life imprisonment for defiling minor' (4 November 2024).
Corroborates the conviction, sentence and registration order, confirming Rafiu was arraigned on 28 October 2021 and the offences occurred inside the mosque premises.
