The perpetrators invoked a religiously framed concept of family honor to police behavior and justify the killings; the trial judge expressly rejected that justification as a distorted notion of honor.

- The Globe and Mail (2012) 'Remarks to the court by Shafia judge' [sentencing remarks of Justice Robert Maranger, Ontario Superior Court, Kingston], 29 January. Available at: theglobeandmail.com (Accessed: 14 July 2026).
Mohammad Shafia, his wife Tooba Yahya and son Hamed were convicted of drowning three teenage daughters and Shafia's first wife in Kingston, Ontario. From the judge's own sentencing remarks: 'You have each been convicted of the planned and deliberate murder of four members of your family... The apparent reason behind these cold-blooded shameful murders was that the four completely innocent victims offended your twisted notion of honour, a notion of honour that is founded upon the domination and control of women, a sick notion of honour that has absolutely no place in any civilized society.' Each received life with no parole eligibility for 25 years. Note: the court framed the motive as a distorted familial 'honour' code, not as religious doctrine — a distinction the record supports and this survey preserves.
