Evidence structure

Proceedings

  1. 2023-01-01 · conviction on one of four counts

Retten i Aarhus (Aarhus District Court). The pastor was charged with four counts of indecency for sharing intimate images and videos of congregation members; convicted on one count where corroborating evidence existed and acquitted on the other three for lack of evidence. Sentenced to 14 days' conditional imprisonment plus 2,500 kroner compensation to the victim. The court held that his position as her pastoral confidant — 'she was his parishioner' — aggravated the offence. His admitted sexual relationships with four congregants (2017-2020) predated Denmark's May 2023 law criminalising clergy abuse of position (modelled on existing protections for doctors and psychologists) and were not separately prosecuted under it.

Documented coercion mechanisms

  • pastoral counselling relationship in which the victim treated him as her spiritual confidant
  • position of trust explicitly cited by the court as aggravating the offence
