The court's own finding is the spiritual nexus: the victim experienced the congregation leader's authority as divinely sanctioned speech ('hans ord som Guds ord'), and fear of God — not merely personal deference — was identified as a specific reason she could not refuse or leave the relationship.

Romerike og Glåmdal tingrett (Romerike and Glåmdal District Court), Norway. A former congregation leader was convicted of repeated sexual abuse of a member 37 years his junior, whom he first met when she was a child; the court found the six-year sexual relationship (2012-2018) was obtained in a manner that excluded genuine voluntariness because of the dependent relationship. He was sentenced to one year and seven months' imprisonment and ordered to pay NOK 220,000 in compensation. The court noted the victim regarded the leader's words as God's word, and that fear of God was part of why she felt she had to endure the relationship.
Documented coercion mechanisms
- the victim regarded the leader's words as God's word; fear of God was cited by the court as part of why she felt compelled to endure the relationship
- structural dependency relationship between leader and member
