The victim's access to the priest, and his to her, ran through her family's ordinary visits to the parish rectory as churchgoers; the pastoral familiarity that relationship created is what the abuse exploited.

Proceedings
2023-01-09 · conviction on retrial, following a reversed acquittal
Okresný súd Humenné (District Court of Humenné), Slovakia. On 9 January 2023 — roughly 18 years after the abuse began — the District Court of Humenné convicted the priest of the continued sexual abuse of a minor. The woman said the priest, whom she knew from visiting the parish rectory as a child, abused her beginning at age 12 and continuing for years. An initial 2018 trial ended in acquittal; that verdict was overturned on appeal, and a differently constituted panel convicted him based on indirect evidence and expert psychological assessments documenting trauma indicators consistent with her account.
Documented coercion mechanisms
- his position as the parish priest whose rectory the victim visited as a child in a context of religious/pastoral familiarity
- the multi-year duration of abuse beginning when she was 12, which an initial acquittal took a decade further to overturn
