Pengadilan Negeri Surabaya, Indonesia. Moch Subchi Azal Tsani ('Mas Bechi'), son of the founding kiai of Pondok Pesantren Shiddiqiyyah, was convicted of sexually abusing five female students, the lead count concerning the rape of a santriwati during a 2017 health-volunteer recruitment interview at the pesantren clinic. He evaded arrest for years under his father's standing before surrendering in July 2022. The seven-year sentence — against a sixteen-year prosecution demand — was publicly criticised as inadequate by the Ministry of Women's Empowerment.
Documented coercion mechanisms
- institutional religious authority over santriwati
- recruitment interviews at the pesantren clinic used as the setting
- years of evasion under the founder's protection
