Archive classification

This is the archive's application of its published inclusion test. The cited record appears below.

DUAL AUTHORITY, stated as such: he was at once the children's adoptive father and the archpriest whose enclosed community was their entire world — the two roles are inseparable here, and the community structure is what made refusal or escape implausible.

  • Pastoral or clerical authority
  • Institutional obedience or isolation

Proceedings

  1. 2021-12-24 · conviction; upheld on appeal

Saraktash District Court; Orenburg Regional Court, Russia. Nikolai Stremsky, archpriest and rector of the Holy Trinity Obitel of Mercy at Saraktash, was convicted on 24 December 2021 of rape, violent sexual acts, coercion to sexual acts, depraved acts, torture, cruel neglect of children, and involving minors in antisocial acts, against children raised in the community he ran. He received twenty-one years in a strict-regime colony plus two years' restricted liberty and a twenty-year ban on work with children, and was stripped of a state parental award. The Orenburg Regional Court upheld the conviction on 18 July 2022 and a cassation attempt failed.

Documented coercion mechanisms

  • an enclosed religious community that was simultaneously the children's home
  • combined clerical and parental authority leaving no addressable outside
