Archive classification

This is the archive's application of its published inclusion test. The cited record appears below.

The victims were professed nuns under vows of obedience to their prioress; the same religious-authority relationship the corpus's 1869 Saurin v Starr record identifies is present here in a modern criminal case — enclosure, vowed obedience, and the prioress's formal spiritual office over the victims were what made refusal and disclosure impossible for years.

  • Institutional obedience or isolation
  • Religious marriage or family control

Proceedings

  1. 2020-07-01 · conviction and sentence

Tribunal de Juicio y Apelaciones de Gualeguay, Entre Ríos, Argentina. Luisa Ester Toledo (religious name Sor María Isabel de la Santísima Trinidad), prioress of the Discalced Carmelite convent of Nogoyá, was convicted of aggravated illegal deprivation of liberty against two nuns under her authority, Silvia Albarenque and Roxana Peña, and sentenced to 3 years' effective imprisonment. The court found she prevented the victims from leaving the convent for years and subjected them to violence, threats and torments including whipping, gags, cilices and beatings. Albarenque had entered the convent at 18 and endured roughly a decade of the abuse before her 2016 public complaint.

  2. Date in cited record · appeal

Sala Penal, Superior Tribunal de Justicia de Entre Ríos, Argentina. The conviction and sentence were confirmed on appeal.

Documented coercion mechanisms

  • formal religious authority as prioress over nuns bound by vows of obedience and enclosure
  • prolonged isolation from family and outside contact
  • physical torture (whipping, gags, cilices/spiked belts, forced fasting) framed as religious discipline
