Ngwenya's pastoral office in Bushiri's ECG church is what brought him into the victim's home alone at night, and he used the ritual pretext of prayer and anointing with holy oil to gain access to the sleeping child and to frame his conduct afterward. The family's deference to a visiting church pastor — not any independent relationship — is what created the opportunity.

Hwange Regional Magistrates Court, Zimbabwe. David Ngwenya, 30, a singer/pastor at Shepherd Bushiri's Enlightened Christian Gathering church, was convicted after a full trial of raping a 12-year-old congregant in Mkhosana suburb, Victoria Falls, in January 2018. Magistrate Collet Ncube sentenced him to 16 years' imprisonment, with 2 years suspended for 5 years on condition of good behaviour.
