The abuse began with the sacrament of confession itself: the priest who heard the victim's confession used the secrecy she was bound to trust the Church to keep as the direct instrument of coercion, threatening its disclosure to her husband.     Kerala Police Crime Branch / Kerala High Court / Supreme Court of India. Fr Job Mathew taken into custody on 12 July 2018 after the Kerala High Court rejected his anticipatory bail application on 11 July 2018; the Crime Branch subsequently booked four priests — Fr Abraham Varghese (also referred to as Fr Sony Varghese), Fr Job Mathew, Fr Johnson Mathew and Fr Jaise K George — on charges of rape and molestation. Fr Sony Varghese and Fr Jaise K George were later directed by the Supreme Court to surrender (August 2018) after their anticipatory bail pleas were dismissed. The survivor confessed to Fr Job Mathew, ahead of her child's baptism, about an earlier relationship with clergy student Soni Varghese and threats he had made against her. Job Mathew then summoned her and threatened to disclose the confession's contents to her husband unless she provided sexual favours; the blackmail began in 2009 and the case surfaced in June 2018. Job Mathew was taken into custody on 12 July 2018 after the Kerala High Court rejected his anticipatory bail application the day before.
