A 58-year-old imam of a village mosque in Suzak district was convicted of a violent sexual act against a minor (a 10-year-old boy, offence reported by the child's mother in 2016), together with separate drug-possession and extremism charges. An initial sentence of seven years was appealed by the Jalal-Abad regional prosecutor as too lenient; on review the court issued a revised sentence of 21 years in a high-security colony, entering into force 28 September 2017.
