    Special CBI Court, Panchkula, Haryana (Judge Jagdeep Singh). Convicted on two counts of rape (IPC 376) and criminal intimidation (IPC 506) of two former sadhvis (female disciples) whom he had sexually abused inside the Dera between 1999 and 2001, after a CBI investigation triggered by an anonymous 2002 letter from Dera members. Sentenced 28 August 2017 to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment on each rape count, to run consecutively (20 years total), plus a fine. The verdict triggered rioting by his followers across Haryana and Punjab that killed at least 31 people; that violence is not part of this record. He remains in custody on this conviction as of July 2026; it has not been overturned on appeal.

Appellate history

  1. No successful appeal of the rape/intimidation conviction has been reported; it remains the operative basis for his continued imprisonment. (Separate murder convictions arising from retaliation against people who exposed the rapes — of Dera manager Ranjit Singh, and of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati — were later overturned on appeal in 2024 and 2026 respectively; those cases concerned killing of whistleblowers, not abuse of disciples under his authority, and are not the basis of this record.)
