'In 1990, the US federal government indicted Kīrtanānanda on five counts of racketeering, six counts of mail fraud, and conspiracy to murder two of his opponents in the Hare Krishna movement (Stephen Bryant and Charles St. Denis). It also charged that he ordered the killings because the victims had threatened to reveal his sexual abuse of minors... In 1996, before Kīrtanānanda's retrial was completed, he pleaded guilty to one count of racketeering (mail fraud). He was sentenced to 20 years in prison.' Note: the murder-conspiracy counts were never adjudicated to conviction — the jury hung on them, and earlier convictions were vacated on appeal; the racketeering plea is the established conviction.

Thomas Drescher, a New Vrindaban devotee, was convicted of the '1986 contract killing of a dissident member of the sect'. 'He was found guilty of the May 22, 1986, shooting death of Stephen L. Bryant, an outspoken critic of the Hindu religious sect... In addition, the jurors found the defendant guilty of a special allegation of murder for financial gain... Drescher is serving a life term in West Virginia for murdering another Krishna devotee, Charles St. Denis, in 1983.' Bryant had spent years publicly documenting abuse at New Vrindaban; killing the whistleblower was the enforcement arm of the belief system's authority.
