'Keith Raniere, a self-improvement guru whose organization NXIVM attracted millionaires and actresses among its adherents, was sentenced Tuesday to 120 years in prison on convictions that he turned some female followers into sex slaves branded with his initials... Women were also pressured into giving up embarrassing information about themselves that could be used against them if they left the group.' NXIVM made no supernatural claims — its 'collateral' blackmail is the same binding architecture as a juju oath's shrine packet of hair and fingernails, stripped of the spirits. The mechanism does not require gods; it requires leverage over what a victim believes will destroy them.
