Proceedings
2014-11-17 · federal conviction and sentence
U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico (Judge Aida M. Delgado Colón). Nelson Santiago Colón, 50, former pastor of Iglesia Cristiana Peniel in Santa Isabel, was sentenced to 40 years imprisonment plus 15 years of supervised release for sexually abusing three minors aged 12-16 between 2004 and 2011, having lured them under the pretense of washing the church vehicle for payment. Thirty additional state-level charges were pending in Ponce covering a fourth victim.
Documented coercion mechanisms
- pastoral trust and access exploited by luring congregant minors with promised chores/payment
- victims' own stated paralysis at 'seeing their pastor capable' of the abuse
