    Sarasota County Circuit Court (Venice), Florida, USA. After a Venice father discovered lewd messages from Wert to his 14-year-old son's phone in January 2011 and reported him, Wert was charged with sexual battery and lewd-behavior counts. In February 2013 a jury convicted him on eight counts of illegal sexual activity with a child, and he was sentenced to life in prison. He was separated from the Carmelite order in 2012 and laicized by the Vatican in March 2015. The Illinois attorney general's 2023 clergy report later documented that the Diocese of Joliet and the Carmelites had not disclosed Wert on public credibly-accused lists until AG investigators intervened.
