Noël exploited his position as parish priest across a succession of Acadian francophone parishes in the Diocese of Bathurst; when parents or Church officials raised concerns, the diocese repeatedly relocated him rather than removing his access to children, extending the abuse over two decades.

English gloss: In 2010 Lévi Noël was sentenced to eight years after pleading guilty to 22 counts of gross indecency and indecent assault against 18 boys aged 8-16 between 1958 and 1981 — the heaviest sentence ever given a pedophile priest in Canada. Correspondence from the early 1960s among Church officials, including Bishop Valéry Vienneau, documents abuse allegations in the parishes where Noël served; he was moved to a new community more than half a dozen times following these disclosures.

Reports that the Diocese of Bathurst's insurer was ordered by the New Brunswick Court of Appeal to reimburse the diocese over $3.3 million paid out to victims of its priests, part of a broader compensation process (led by Michel Bastarache) under which victims of the Bathurst and Moncton dioceses received close to $18 million.
