Lee specifically targeted midshipmen who came to him for pastoral counseling after being identified as gay — a moment of acute vulnerability where his role as confessor/chaplain was the only avenue open to them within the institution's constraints. He used that counseling relationship to coerce a Marine into producing nude photographs and to force himself on a midshipman.

Washington Post (2007) 'Navy Chaplain Pleads Guilty', 6 December 2007.

Lt. Cmdr. John Thomas Lee, a Catholic priest and Navy chaplain assigned to the U.S. Naval Academy from September 2003 to October 2006, pleaded guilty at a court-martial at Quantico Marine Corps Base to 11 charges including forcible sodomy, aggravated assault, fraternization, conduct unbecoming an officer and wrongful use of a government computer. Investigators found Lee had sex or inappropriate contact with several men, including academy students who came to him for counseling after being identified as homosexual; he forced himself on a Naval Academy midshipman, coerced a Marine he was counseling to take nude photographs of him, and had unprotected sex with an Air Force officer without disclosing he was HIV-positive.

Baltimore Sun (2007) 'Academy ex-chaplain sentenced to 2 years', 7 December 2007.

Marine Corps Col. Steven Day sentenced Lee to 12 years' confinement, with 10 years suspended conditioned on compliance with the plea agreement, leaving 2 years to serve. Day also ordered Lee to disclose the names of all sexual partners since 2005, when Lee learned he was HIV-positive.

Fox News (2007) 'HIV-Positive Navy Chaplain Gets 2 Years for Sexually Assaulting Midshipman'.

Confirms the plea agreement and sentence; Lee had been relieved of chaplain duties in June 2007 when the allegations came forward.
