Municipal Court, Zagreb; County Court, Zagreb (appeal). Fr Ivan Čuček was found guilty of sixteen counts of indecent acts (bludničenje) against ten girls aged around ten to twelve, whom he touched under their clothing and had sit on his lap during substitute religious-education classes. The County Court reduced the sentence to one year and six months, suspended, with a three-year probation period, reasoning in part that he was no longer in contact with children. This is recorded by Croatian press as the country's first final conviction of a Catholic priest for a child sexual offence.
Documented coercion mechanisms
- authority as the children's religious-education teacher
- position as parish priest overseeing catechism preparation
