Coffey was the ordained parish priest of the families he abused; victims described being alone with him in the sacristy, presbytery, or his car specifically because of his clerical role, and one victim's police statement records that he was 'afraid to tell my parents ... because Father Coffey was the Catholic priest, highly respected and looked up to in the community. No one would have believed me.' A separate 2024 High Court of Australia ruling (Bird v DP) on diocesan vicarious liability for one of Coffey's victims -- which the Diocese won on the narrow question of vicarious liability -- confirms the same underlying facts: Coffey abused a five-year-old parishioner during a pastoral visit to the child's home in 1971.

A jury found Bryan Desmond Coffey guilty of twelve counts of indecent assault involving eight boys and one girl, and one count of false imprisonment, committed against children in parishes across western Victoria between 1960 and 1975.
