The violence cuts both ways, and it is not new. During the 2010 cholera epidemic, dozens of people — mostly Vodou priests — were lynched after being accused of spreading the disease by sorcery. Per HaïtiLibre, quoting a government official: 'Nous avons dénombré 40 morts par lynchage dans Département de la Grand'Anse et 5 autres dans des communes du Plateau Central [...] les gens s'attaquent à des guérisseurs accusés de sorcellerie liée au choléra... Les victimes, la plupart des prêtres vodou, sont battues à coups de machette et de pierre avant d'être brûlées dans la rue.' [English: We counted 40 deaths by lynching in the Grand'Anse Department and 5 others in the Plateau Central [...] people are attacking healers accused of cholera-linked sorcery... The victims, most of them Vodou priests, are beaten with machetes and stones before being burned in the street.]
