Nguyễn Ngọc Hải, 57, who since around 2012 practised acupressure while presenting himself as a spiritual teacher able to emit healing 'energy' from his body and who led dharma talks, scripture readings and guided meditation for his 'disciples', was convicted of rape (cưỡng dâm/hiếp dâm) and sentenced on 24 September 2025 to 8 years' imprisonment for sexually assaulting seven women during 'energy transmission' treatment sessions, several by massaging genitals under the claim they would 'receive energy'; the court separately referred him for administrative penalty for practising superstition.
