Both victims came to Mafolela specifically as clients seeking his services as a traditional healer. He used the healer's authority to diagnose a spiritual affliction, then used the pretext of a ritual medical treatment (inserting spiritual medicine) to commit the first rape and threats of supernatural retribution to keep her silent, and exploited the same treatment-seeking relationship to drug and attack the second client.

Bongani Mafolela was convicted of rape and attempted rape and sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment (10 years for rape, 5 years for attempted rape, ordered to run consecutively). The court found he abused cultural beliefs and his position as a traditional healer to exploit both victims, one in February 2022 and, after his release on bail, a second in September 2024.

In the first incident, February 2022, Mafolela convinced a woman she had an evil spirit requiring removal, then raped her under the pretext of inserting spiritual medicine, and threatened her with harm if she disclosed the assault. While on bail, in September 2024, he met a second victim who had sought his services, drugged her drink and attempted to rape her while she resisted. The court found he 'abused cultural beliefs and his position as a traditional healer to exploit his victims.'
