The authority is the claimed capacity to remove a curse, and this judgment shows it doing two separate jobs. First it defined the object of treatment as the jewellery itself, which is what made handing over an entire collection intelligible — the items had to be present to be cleansed. Then, when the victim asked for them back, the same claim supplied the explanation for their absence: they had been destroyed because the curse could not be lifted from them. A victim who accepted the first proposition had no ground on which to reject the second, and the judgment records that she asked repeatedly and received the same answer each time. The belief that justified the taking also postponed its discovery.

Krasnogorsk City Court, Moscow Oblast, Russia (Красногорский городской суд Московской области). The defendant, anonymised in the published judgment as ФИО1, was convicted of fraud on a large scale under ч.3 ст.159 of the Criminal Code. The court found that, in a flat at about 16:00, she saw the victim's jewellery and decided to take it, and by deception under the pretext of removing a curse from the jewellery persuaded the victim to hand it over. The victim gathered sixteen items from the flat, itemised in the judgment by weight, size and value — including white gold flower-set earrings worth 15,040 roubles and gold wedding rings worth 42,112 and 21,056 roubles — totalling 337,351.86 roubles. On the defendant's own account recorded in the judgment, when the victim later asked for the items back she said they were gone, that she had been obliged to flush them into the drain because a curse had been placed on them and she had been unable to remove the negative energy, and she repeated that answer to further demands. The court awarded the victim 301,457.17 roubles, taking into account 35,894.69 roubles already repaid, and refused the claim for non-pecuniary damage. The custodial term and probationary period are redacted in the published text; the sentence was suspended under ст.73 with obligations to register monthly, not to change residence without notice and to take steps to compensate the loss in full.
Documented coercion mechanisms
- the curse located on the jewellery itself, so that the whole of it had to be gathered and handed over for treatment
- the victim collecting sixteen items from around her own home at the defendant's direction
- the same claim reused to explain the loss: when the victim asked for the items back she was told they had been flushed into the drain because the negative energy could not be removed from them
- repeated demands for return met with the same answer, which deferred any complaint

The full text of the criminal judgment, read directly from the Russian judgments database sudact.ru. The court records that the defendant, «увидев у ФИО2 ювелирные украшения... решила их похитить», and «путем обмана, под предлогом снятия порчи с ювелирных украшений убедила ФИО2 отдать ей... ювелирные украшения», after which the victim «собрала находящиеся в квартире ювелирные украшения» — sixteen items itemised in the judgment, beginning «Серьги с белым золотом и камнем «гранит» в виде цветка с английским замком, весом 5 гр., стоимостью 15040 рублей» and including «Обручальное кольцо, золотое – 14 гр., размер 20, стоимостью 42112 рублей». The total is recorded as «на общую сумму 337351 рубль 86 копеек... в крупном размере». The defendant's own account, recorded from the investigation, is that when the victim «стала спрашивать у нее возврата указанных выше ювелирных изделий... The operative part convicts under ч.3 ст.159, suspends the sentence under ст.73, and awards «301457... рублей 17 копеек» to the victim.
