Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, Australia — Case Study 21. The Commission examined the experiences of 11 survivors of child sexual abuse at or connected with the ashram in the 1970s-80s, principally under Swami Akhandananda Saraswati, and the ashram's response. Akhandananda was convicted in 1989 of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old follower and sentenced to two years four months, but the conviction was overturned on appeal in 1991 following a legislative change — leaving the Commission's institutional finding, not a standing criminal conviction, as the durable record.
