The authority is the claimed capacity to remove a curse by charming the affected property, and this judgment shows the claim doing two things at once. The approach was a request for alms, which is what put the defendant at eight separate front doors without arousing suspicion — a person asking for charity has a reason to be there that householders recognise. The curse claim then converted that encounter into a transaction over the household's own valuables, and the requirement that the charming be done outside the flat gave a reason, within the rite's own terms, for the property to leave the owner's sight. The court found she never intended to return any of it. Eight households accepted the same sequence.

Oktyabrsky District Court of Krasnoyarsk, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia (Октябрьский районный суд г. Красноярска). The defendant, anonymised in the published judgment as ФИО1, was convicted on seven counts of fraud causing significant damage to a citizen under ч.2 ст.159 of the Criminal Code and on one count of open theft under ч.1 ст.161, committed against eight victims identified in the judgment by initials. The court found that in each case she was at the victim's home for the purpose of obtaining alms and, in conversation, asked under the pretext of removing a curse for the victim's valuables or money so that they could be charmed outside the flat, having no intention of returning them. In the first count she obtained a gold chain, a gold cross and four gilt earrings; in another, 12,000 roubles. The recorded losses across the counts were 7,100, 86,000, 12,000, 27,000, 20,400, 27,000, 38,000 and 19,500 roubles, a total of 237,000 roubles. Individual terms ranged from one year to one year five months, aggregated by partial addition under ч.2 ст.69 to two years' deprivation of liberty in a colony-settlement, with time in pre-trial detention credited. Compensation was awarded to the victims.
