Verulam Regional Court, KwaZulu-Natal. Adhyatma Amithananda, 57, a Hindu priest who arrived in South Africa from Kerala in March 2010 at the invitation of local religious leaders, was convicted before Regional Court Magistrate Jenny Pillay on six counts of rape, two of sexual grooming, and creating/publishing/possessing child pornography. The victim, a 12-year-old girl with epilepsy from oThongathi (Tongaat), was brought to him by her family — who had met him at a temple religious discourse — so he could pray over and cure her condition; he sexually abused her from June 2010 and raped her repeatedly from March 2011. Sentences ran concurrently for an effective 25 years, reported in South African press as a life term, with parole eligibility thereafter.
Documented coercion mechanisms
- claimed healing power over the girl's epilepsy
- family's religious deference after meeting him at a temple discourse
- grooming via promised cure before escalating to rape
